Using found clay, charcoal from burnt trees, and other natural pigments to dye fabric, I archive the residue of performance, ritual, and play with the landscape. I combine the resulting objects with video and audio featuring meditative action and breathwork to create tableaus centering contemplative and reverent relationship with the land.
This interdisciplinary documentation lives on past the ephemeral moment, spanning time and space to connect with the viewer. In noticing and relishing joyful moments, we appreciate the present. Developing a practice of noticing and making time for simple pleasures will generate a nuanced attunement (or eye) to opportunities for ease in the future. Practice takes time and focus which I choose to structure with meditation and breathwork. This structure can be seen in the use of grids and compositional choices throughout the work as well as the repetition of body motions with material processes such as pinching, sewing, and dyeing.
Through the engagement of mindfulness practices with natural materials, seen in the use of embodied repetitive actions and craft processes, my work encourages viewers to examine their relationships with themselves, their community, and nature towards to goal of imagining and building a joyful and sustainable future.
